Brief history
Queen’s Park was first a 15 acre public pleasure garden renamed in honour of Queen Adelaide in 1831 by Thomas Attree after he bought the land at about that time. Intended to become an exclusive residential area around the park, (as it is now!) Charles Barry, who created the Houses of Parliament, was commissioned to design a villa for Attree and a second villa, mentioned in the Brighton Gazette in 1831, built for Mr W. S. Cowell. It is generally accepted that Queen’s Park Villas, also known as Pennant Lodge is that house, as the design is very Charles Barry, Lady Emily Pennant was living somewhere in Queen’s Park by 1845 and this glorious house was certainly home to a respected lawyer and M.P. Charles Freshfield by the late 1880’s. Curiously, there is a plaque on the side of the house listing its date as 1851.
